The beginnings of cheerleading can be traced back to the 19th century, when supporters at American colleges began organizing simple cheers and chants to boost the morale of their sports teams.
Records show that in the 1880s, the University of Minnesota became one of the first colleges to form an official team known as “yell leaders” to support their football team.
