Within these proposed regulations, CAC clarified that cameras and personal identification devices are strictly prohibited from being installed in privacy-sensitive areas such as hotel rooms, public restrooms, changing rooms, bathrooms, and other locations that could infringe upon the privacy of others.
Regulators also suggested that if image-capturing devices are installed in public spaces, they should only serve the purpose of public safety and must be accompanied by conspicuous warning signs.

These new rules come into play amid China’s robust efforts to tighten data regulations through a series of laws and policies.
Particularly noteworthy is China’s introduction of its first law focusing on user privacy, the Personal Information Protection Law, which was enacted in 2021.
